Biblical Disappointment

When I was a kid watching football with my parents, I would always see someone, usually dressed in some sort of wig or other wacky clothes, holding a sign that said “John 3:16.” I saw it in the stadium of every game, every time.

I thought it must be something important that I absolutely had to know. I kept seeing it. It must an amazing tidbit of knowledge.

Halfway through the second quarter of a game my family was watching, I snuck to the back of the house to the book case where my mother kept her Bible. My hands were shaking as I turned the thin crinkly pages in the heavy book.

After a few moments, I found the passage; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Well shit, that doesn’t have anything to do with football AT ALL!
